Half Sword hidden secrets and tips

Half Sword is packed with small details you don't notice at first. Some don't matter, some can kill you, and some can win you fights. This guide covers the hidden mechanics, environmental tricks, and progression secrets that separate survivors from corpses.

Steal Gear Directly from Enemies

The shop in Half Sword is massively overpriced. Buying gear is not worth it. The best way to get stronger is by taking equipment directly off enemies you beat.

🎯 How to Loot Gear

  1. 1. Grab the enemy by the piece you want (helmet, armor, etc.)
  2. 2. Hold the grab button again β€” the item goes into your hand
  3. 3. Put it straight on yourself

Insurance Trick

If you insure your gear, you can drop it mid-fight, grab better stuff from enemies, and still get your original gear back later. Use this to upgrade on the fly without risk.

Environmental Hazards & Secrets

Every map in Half Sword has some kind of environmental factor. Most of them just aren't alive. Objects in the world aren't just props β€” if it breaks loose, you can pick it up and probably use it as a weapon.

The Slums "Mud" River

You know all those times you slipped on mud on the Slums map? That's not mud. There's a brown trail coming off the building with an overhang. It's a medieval poop river. Watch your step.

Spike Traps

⚠️ Spike Trap Timing

If you flip the lever when enemies are right about there (at the trap zone), you'll impale them instantly. The timing window is tight but devastating.

Falling Debris

You can pull stuff down on enemies. If it doesn't kill them outright, use the debris to smush them. Smother them with debris. Smush the life right out of them.

Forest Map: Beehive Traps

The forest map has hanging beehives and they're not just decoration. Hit one and it can fall off the tree and potentially break. The bees will attack everyone nearby.

🐝 Beehive Mechanics

  • β€’ Knock hives off trees by hitting them
  • β€’ Grab hives directly off the tree
  • β€’ Throw hives if you don't agitate them too much
  • β€’ Crossbow bolts don't trigger them β€” shooting does nothing
  • β€’ Sometimes hives break when thrown, sometimes they don't

Bee Behavior is Unpredictable

It's not clear how the bees decide who lives and who dies. Sometimes the enemy hits the hive and you still die. Sometimes you break the hive but the enemy dies. The bees will kill you and send you to the abyss if you don't give up fast enough.

Hidden Loot & Secret Areas

Slums Bridge Loot

On the Slums map, cross the bridge carefully to get to some loot on the other side. Pick up the lit candles β€” you can use them as a makeshift torch to see what's at the end of the tunnel.

Cellar Frying Pan

🍳 The Legendary Frying Pan

In the cellar, you can find a frying pan. This is legitimately one of the best melee weapons in the game. Don't sleep on it.

Jumping: The Hidden Mechanic

You can jump in this game, and it actually helps train your character's leg strength.

🦘 How to Jump

  1. 1. Hold Spacebar
  2. 2. Release to jump
  3. 3. Use this to loot the wagon on the forest map

Character Progression Secrets

Muscle Definition

Compare a brand new character versus a very old character β€” you can see there's a bit more muscle definition on experienced characters. The visual difference is subtle but it's there.

Weapon Weight Customization

πŸ₯‰ Copper

The next heaviest decorative metal. Use if you don't have gold yet.

πŸ₯‡ Gold

The heaviest decorative metal. Choose gold for maximum weapon weight.

Vengeful Spirits: The Hidden Danger

If you fully kill your opponents and don't make them surrender, they will become vengeful spirits.

πŸ’€ A Cautionary Tale

One player lost their 220-day-old character in progression mode because they had been testing the longsword and fully killing enemies. They had four vengeful spirits accumulated without realizing it. Failed to pay them off, and that was the end.

Always Make Them Surrender

Unless you're prepared to deal with vengeful spirits, force enemies to surrender instead of killing them outright. It's safer for your long-term progression.

New Punching System

The punching in Early Access is different now. It's more precise with multiple attack types:

πŸ‘Š Punch Types

  • β€’ Big giant swings β€” maximum power
  • β€’ Medium jabs β€” balanced speed and power
  • β€’ Very small jabs β€” quick and precise

Map Boundary Exploits

There's a way to get out of the forest map. You can even drag an enemy out with you.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Forest Map Escape

Look for a little ramp of boulders on the edge of the map. Walk right up it and you're out. They're going to patch this soon, so try it while you still can.
